The “Center of NMR spectroscopy” at the IOCCP-BAS implements structural analysis of small and middle sized molecules – conformation and configurations; stereochemistry of molecules with central and planar chirality; structure of new synthetic and natural biologically active compounds and compositions – flavonoids, terpenoids, alkaloids, carbohydrates, antibiotics, nucleotides, etc.; steric interactions through 13С NMR spectroscopy. 

Prof Simova has scientific interest and experience in the investigations on the phytochemical profile and metabolomis analyses of samples of a number of edible and medicinal plant species.

Prof  Trendafilova obtained her Master’s degree in “Organic and Analytical Chemistry” at the Faculty of Chemistry of Sofia University “St. Cl. Ohridski” in 1991, and in 1997 successfully defended a PhD thesis in the topic of “Sesquiterpene lactones in some Bulgarian medicinal plants from the Asteraceae family” at the IOCCP – BAS. In 1992 she began work as a chemist in the Laboratory of Chemistry of Natural Compounds at the Institute. Over the years, she has successively held the positions of Research assistant (1993-2011), Associate professor (2011-2019) and Professor (2019-present). She has been the leader of two national projects financed by the Bulgarian National Science Fund and four projects under the International Academic Exchange of BAS with the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (Faculty of Chemistry, University of Belgrade) and TUBITAK (Anatolian University and Marmara Research Center, Food Institute) and participant in numerous national and international research projects, coordinator for Bulgaria in the “Pan-Balkan Alliance of Natural Products and Drug Discovery Associations (PANDA)” and member of the Bulgarian Phytochemical Society and the Association of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants of South-Eastern European Countries. 

Prof Trendafilova is the co-author of 100 scientific publications in international scientific journals, H-index – 11.

Scientific interests: phytochemical studies of aromatic, medicinal, endemic and in vitro cultivated plants – extraction, isolation and structural characterization of secondary metabolites (essential oils, terpenoids and phenolic compounds); methods for quantitative determination of biologically active components; chemotaxonomy; biological activity;

Dr Motyka obtained his Education: Ing. (M.Sc. equivalent) at the University of Agriculture, Faculty of Agronomy, Prague (graduated 1982); CSc. (Ph.D. equivalent) – Institute of Experimental Botany, Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, Prague (degree in plant physiology 1990).

Professional experience: Institute of Experimental Botany of the Czech Academy of Sciences (Research Fellow 1984 – 1990, Senior Research Fellow 1990 – now).

Scientific interests in phytohormone analytics (LC-MS/MS), involvement of phytohormones in plant growth and developmental processes and responses to stresses. Cytokinins: metabolism and physiological function of cytokinins, hormonal interactions in regulation of cytokinin contents in plants, role of cytokinins in plant-microbe interactions, involvement of cytokinins (in association with other hormones) in control of somatic embryogenesis in conifers, plant organogenesis and in natural leaf senescence, cytokinins-secondary metabolites interrelations, involvement of cytokininsin abiotic stresses.

Dr Motyka’s other interests include gardening, tourism/trekking, sports.

Dr Aneva obtained her Bachelor’s degree at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” within the period 2004 – 2008 and her Master’s degree in Botany (Vascular plants) at the same faculty from 2008 to 2010. Her Master’s thesis entitled “Floristic characteristics of the Bulgarian part of Vlahina Mt from Delchevo to Mount Kadiytsa” led to the identification of 614 species of plants, 23 of which were new to the mountain. She obtained Golden medal for excellent results. Dr Aneva developed and defended her PhD thesis “Biological and phytochemical in situ and ex situ study of species of the genus Sideritis with conservation importance in Bulgaria” at the Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences within the period 2012 – 2016. 

From 2011 up to now, Dr Aneva has been working at the IBER-BAS (2011 – 2012 as Biologist, 2012 – 2017 as Assistant professor, 2017 – 2019 as Senior Assistant Professor and 2019 till now as Associate professor at the Department of Applied botany, Medicinal and aromatic plants – conservation and sustainable use.

Her research interests include medicinal plants, flora, phytochemistry.

Dr Gerginova is a young researcher who defended her PhD thesis at IOCCP-BAS in the topic of NMR metabolomics of honeybee and wine.

In 2008, Dr Ivanova started her education at the University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy – Sofia. In 2012, she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology. In 2013 – with a Master’s degree in Fine Organic Synthesis. In 2013, she started working as a chemist at IOCCP – BAS with main activities: planning and conducting scientific research in the field of chemistry of natural compounds: extraction, isolation and structural characterization of secondary metabolites (terpenoids and phenolic compounds). She defended her PhD thesis at the IOCCP-BAS in the topic of phytochemical characterization of species of genus Inula growing in Bulgaria.

Dr Danova obtained her Master’s degree in Pharmacy in the topic of phytochemical characterization of Balkan endemic Hypericum umbelatum A. Kern., at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Medical University, Sofia and her PhD in the topic of in vitro culture and secondary metabolites in Hypericum and Pulsatilla species and cryopreservation of Hypericum rumeliacum Boiss. at the Faculty of Biology, Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. 

Her scientific interests include pharmacognosy, plant secondary metabolites, plant cell tissue and organ culture of medicinal and aromatic plants, plant physiology. The plant cell tissue and organ culture facilities unit at the laboratory Chemistry of Natural Compounds at IOCCP-BAS was equipped within the bilateral Bulgarian-Swiss Scientific Phytobalk project with principal investigator from Bulgaria Dr Danova.
